Regional variety

The Canton of Berne has six economic regions (Berne and surrounding area, Biel-Seeland, Emmental, Oberaargau, Bernese Oberland and Bernese Jura), each with its own distinct advantages. As a result, the Canton of Berne has attracted a range of different companies, giving it a varied economic structure.

Berne - charming national capital

The region of Berne is the primary economic centre of the Canton. As the capital of Switzerland, the city of Berne is renowned as a safe city of unparalled beauty even well beyond national borders. Numerous successful companies have located to the region of Berne, many of which are headquartered in Europe, such as Swisscom, T-Systems, Haag & Streit, ZLB Behring, Berna Biotech, ebay, Pepsico, Peugeot (Suisse) and Schneider Elektrik. The region of Berne also has more financial advisors, lawyers and firms of trustees than anywhere else in Switzerland, as well as an attractive selection of education institutes, such as the University of Berne with its university hospital, the Berne University of Applied Sciences, the World Trade Institute, the International School and the French School.

Biel-Seeland – multicultural centre for the watch industry and communications

The region of Biel-Seeland is a highly dynamic, multicultural economic region in which both French and German are spoken but which has remained close to its traditions, one of which is watchmaking. World famous watches such as Swatch, Omega, Rado and Rolex are made here. The watchmaking and, to a lesser extent, the precision industry have gravitated to this region, thanks to an excellent network of manufacturers, suppliers and schools. Swiss companies such as Feintool, Mikron and the Swatch Group, as well as numerous foreign companies such as Harting, Festo, Movado Group, Fossil and La Montre Hermès, are headquartered in the region of Biel-Seeland. With the Federal Office for Communications and companies such as Orange, Sunrise, IXOS and SAP based in the region, Biel-Seeland is also a stronghold of the communications industry.
